“When a proton beam of radiation fires into my eye, ultraviolet auroras appear in my vision. An unexpected moment of beauty in a cancer treatment centre in the Wirral opens the doorway to a world of Æsir and Vanir gods and their epic quests in the pursuit of ‘seeing’.”
Odin’s Eye and the Art of Seeing is a solo oral storytelling performance told by Alice Fernbank.
Three Norse myths – ‘Odin’s Eye’, ‘Gullveig’, and ‘Mimir’s Head’ are interwoven with her story of receiving radiotherapy treatment for a rare eye cancer.
The piece emerged from the experience of receiving cancer diagnosis and treatment and how she found a deeper sense of what was happening through myth. The cancer treatment resulted in vision loss in her left eye and it was through these 3 myths that the gravity of her experience could be explored on a level that medical care could not reach.
