Three Actors bring new life to classic Para Handy tales in a 1950s Radio Broadcast
No Nonsense Productions Presents
‘Para Handy: A Radio Play on Stage’
The Master Mariner, Dougie the Mate, MacPhail the Engineer and Sunny Jim along with a host of other characters take to the airwaves courtesy of three plucky BBC radio actors. Adapted and directed by and starring Kevin Jannetts these classic comedy tales from Neil Munro are performed as a 1950s radio broadcast. This production features devised radio actor characters, live sound effects (created by the cast and the audience) and live music.
‘Para Handy: A Radio Play on Stage’ was originally created for the Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock and performed against the spectacular backdrop of the Firth of Clyde in the Beacon Bistro and Gallery Suite. Having previously produced, directed and performed in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (for seven consecutive years) and radio play adaptations of: ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘Frankenstein’ Jannetts saw the opportunity to tell Neil Munro’s ever popular Para Handy tales in a fitting and entertaining way. Speaking on the creation of the show Jannetts said: ‘It was a perfect fit. The venue, the audience and the comedy of Neil Munro’s classic Para Handy tales all suited the 1950s radio play format. Creating this new show gave us the opportunity to combine popular and less well known stories which work well in the radio play format.’
‘Para Handy: A Radio Play on Stage’ is produced by No Nonsense Productions and features a cast of four. Kevin Jannetts is a Producer, Director, Writer and Performer. Stewart Phillips is an Actor and has for the past seven years played no less than fourteen characters in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. Calum McVittie is an Actor and professional Magician. Valerie Barr is a hugely talented Accordionist and recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
